I attended the Rickwood Classic two years ago. While it was hot as hell the day I went, it was still a fantastic experience. If you are a fan of minor league
baseball and especially old ballparks, it is an event you need to experience at least once. I highly doubt that you would regret the 9 hour ride (unless it
got rained out). No need to buy tickets in advance as it hasn't sold out in recent years. Some have complained about it becoming too commercial in recent
years, but this didn't bother me at all. Besides my visits to Fenway and Wrigley, attending the Rickwood Classic ranks right up there on my list of most
memorable baseball experiences.

Who? How on earth can an event with limited concession sales and low ticket prices be considered too commercial? |

Who? How on earth can an event with limited concession sales and low ticket prices be considered too commercial?I think the issue I've heard is that there is too much corporate involvement now ... for example, they gave out seat cushions and fans at the game I went to, and both were plastered with a company logo (State Farm, I think). Like I said, not an issue for me, but just a complaint I've heard mentioned on how the Classic has changed from its early years. The concessions is one thing I had an issue with. If you're going to have a "throwback" game like this, how about throwing back the prices as well ? Concession and parking prices seemed a bit high, as if the Barons look at this as just another game, rather than the special event it is. Overall, the Rickwood Classic is a wonderful event. It was amazing to me to see all the license plates from various states - clearly people come from all over. Hopefully it continues for many more years. Brian |

$9 for a ticket and prices lower than concessions at Hoover is more than fair.
I think it's very hard to argue the Barons treat it as just another game, given the festivities associated with the game (there's a banquet the night before) and the care taken with the Negro Leagues uniforms and honorees. The Barons take a hit on this game for the good of community, and I think it's more than a little tetchy to whine about the tickets and concessions being too expensive. |

I am the ultimate fan of minor league ball and especially old time stadiums. My favorite parks are Fenway, Wrigley, Bosse Field in Evansville, etc so you get
the picture. Someone did tell me you didnt have to get tickets ahead of time so thats good. I also plan on staying and going to the Thursday night game at
the Hoover Met, so i can see both parks and also i see its $1 beer and 20 cent wing night. Anyhow, what are the other events surrounding this game? What is
this banquet all about?

This year it's an event to honor Negro Leagues players. The theme is different every year. It's a big, bigger-ticket event, probably not for you if
you're looking forward to dollar beer night. |

I attended the Rickwood Classic for the first time last year. It's a 12 hour drive for me, but I hit a few parks on the way down, and a few more on the
way back.
I believe that Brian's site calls Rickwood a "baseball time machine." And that is true. The old time wall ads (think Burma Shave), the hand operated scoreboard, the bathrooms that are straight from the 1920s, etc. Just a lot of fun. I particularly enjoyed that after the game they let anyone come onto the field to walk around, play catch, mingle. If there was one downside, and this in relatively minor, it is that the place wasn't very clean. I expect some decay in a stadium this old. But, nearly every seat in the bleacher section was covered with a thick layer of dust. Not a big deal, just grab a paper towel out of the bathroom and wipe it down. But, as I move around the stadium, never sitting in anyone seat for more than an inning or so, it got to be a bit of an inconvenience. I echo the sentiments above. If you can make the drive, go. I love the old parks, and having this yearly game at Rickwood gave me the opportunity to see a classic yard that was closed down long before I began "collecting" stadiums. I just wish Engel Stadium would follow suit and do the same thing! |
