Many college diamonds have grass basepaths from home to first and from third to home. Is there any reason for this, or is this just a fad? I don't think this exists in the pros except for artificial turf fields.

It seems to be a fad mostly in the south - I have yet to see such a field in the east. Perhaps it eases some of the field maintenance ?
